Director Talks Shazam's Tone
David F. Sandberg Talks About A Light-Hearted Shazam.
So today Shazam's director David F. Sandberg talked to the Toronto Sun about what you can expect in the Shazam film. He basically said that the film, overall, will be light-hearted and different from previous DCEU films. He also talks about how growing up, he was like any other kid, idolizing the superhero Superman. So with Shazam, he gets to show an example of a kid dreaming of growing up and being like Sueprman. Billy Batson's superpower is that when he yells SHAZAM, he becomes basically this god, whose powers are based off of magic. In his origin, Billy comes across the great elder wizard Merlin, who bestows upon him the gift to turn into Shazam. Now, I'm sure some of you are familiar with how powerful the hero Shazam is and some of you aren't. So if you don't know his powers, he's basically like Superman, he can fly, has superstrength, and he can yell SHAZAM, which will summon a powerful lightning bolt. Then, on top of that, he CAN go toe to toe with Superman because his power is based off of Magic. Superman actually has two weaknesses, one is of course that he's weak against kryptonite, the other, is any sort of magic. Now, he's not as weak to magic as he is against kryptonite, but when he's facing a man who has similar powers to his and has magic on his side, it makes for a hard match. Now, back to the director, if you're not familiar with David F. Sandberg, his most recent film was "Lights Out" which was critically successful, as well with fans of horror. It cost around 5 million dollars to make and made and additional 148 million at the worldwide box office. We also won't be seeing Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Black Adam in this film since that character has a more grittier tone, for those people who don't know, Black Adam is Shazam's greatest for. Like I said, it makes sense not to put Black Adam in this film since it's Shazam's origin story which has a kid finally getting his dreams to be a hero. He won't be ready to face Black Adam just yet.
